Advent Festival 2011

“Come With Us to Bethlehem”, an Advent Festival presented by the Christian Education Committee of Westminster Church, took place Sunday, November 27, after the morning service in the church’s Concert Hall. Approximately thirty adults and children gathered for a pizza lunch. An advent candle was lit and participants were introduced to the meaning of Advent and how it informs our understanding of the Christmas events. Four craft tables were set up giving everyone an opportunity to participate in making yule logs, building milk carton stables, decorating cookies and creating nativity mobiles. It was a fun event for everyone.

Westminster's Fall Feast and Talent Auction

Westminster's Fall Feast and Talent Auction on November 5th, with 170 people in attendance, was both a gastronomic and a financial success. The event was organized by Westminster's energetic Outreach Committee: Boyd Rausch, Ron Miller, Wayne Ryzniczuk, Sherrie Steiner, Annette Kletke and Suzie Conrad. As there was no kitchen stove for the organizers to work with, they enlisted many volunteers from the congregation to help with the cooking and baking. The dinner was delicious. At least 23 pies were baked (Kim Nelson donated 8) and 6 turkeys were roasted in private homes. The dinner was followed by a talent auction which included resume writing, dinner offers, desserts, baking, afternoon tea, special anthem, special sermon, income tax filing etc. Doug Abra as auctioneer.

The dinner realized a profit of $1985.90. The Talent Auction raised $2780. Congratulations to the Committee and to all the volunteers who helped organize such a wonderful and profitable opportunity for fellowship.Westminster United Chruch | Fall FeastWestminster United Chruch | Fall FeastWestminster United Chruch | Fall Feast

Organist, Don Menzies, Celebrates 45 Years At Westminster

Sunday, October 23, the congregation gave Don a standing ovation in recognition of his 45 years of service to Westminster as organist and accompanist, and for his vision and energy in the ongoing success of the Organ Concert Series.

Carol Latter, Chair of the Organ Series, presented Don with a certificate which indicated that well known Ottawa organist and composer, Rachel Lauren, has been commissioned to write a work for organ to be performed by Don on the occasion of our celebration of the building's 100th anniversary.

Westminster General Board Chair, Doug Abra, added to the celebration mentioning that we can look forward to a major revision to the organ during the summer of 2012. Casavant Brothers, the original builders of Westminster's pipe organ, will be responsible for the renovations.

Later in the day at the opening concert of the organ series, Thomas Trotter, organist at The Town Hall in Birmingham, England, paid tribute to Don in remarks to the audience and dedicated his encore to Don. The audience gave Don another round of applause for his work at Westminster.

Calum Matthews on the bagpipes

Calum, son of Nancy and Doug Matthews, was in Winnipeg for his grandfather, Sterling Lyon’s, funeral service on December 22. Later that evening, he lifted the spirits of family and friends by offering a few traditional Scottish pieces during a reception at his uncle’s home. Calum will be back in Winnipeg in February for a bagpipe competition at the Convention Centre. Though he lives in Toronto, Westminster Church is part of his life as it was here that he was baptized by Rev. Campbell when he was six. Westminster United Church | Calum Matthews on the bagpipes

New Year's Message

A NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE FROM REV. ROBERT CAMPBELL

Sometime soon, my family hopes to take in a showing of “The King‟s Speech,” the highly acclaimed new movie about King George VI‟s struggles with stammering and his relationship with the therapist who helped him overcome this disability, thus enabling him to speak to his subjects without embarrassment for him or for them. It was, of course, the behaviour of his feckless brother, Edward VIII, who gave up the throne to marry the American divorcee, Wallace Simpson, that thrust George into this predicament and forced him to come to terms with his impediment. That the king rose to the occasion can be measured by the way he both comforted and rallied the nation with a radio address following the outbreak of the Second World War in September, 1939. This, apparently, is the climactic moment in the movie. Later that year, in his Christmas Broadcast, King George quoted a poem that seemed capture the needs of his people as they faced the dark and uncertain years which lay ahead.

The poem still makes worthy reading at the beginning of any new year, though thankfully, for all our troubles, we live in much better times than the British people faced that Christmas. Nevertheless, the future is always an unknown, both for individuals and for society, and we do well to take its message to heart:

I said to a man who stood at the gate of the year, “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown,” And he replied, “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light And safer than the known way.”

Congratulations James Campbell

For the last three years James has taken exams three times in singing and once in music theory with The Royal Conservatory of Music. Of those four exams he has earned First Class honors once and First Class Honors with distinction three times. In the case of this year he had the added distinction of having the highest mark in Grade Seven voice in the province of Manitoba. For this he was awarded a silver medal. The pictures show James receiving his medal and later with his parents, Rev. Robert and Linda Campbell. James is currently in Grade 12 and plans, next year, to move on to university to further his studies in music. Westminster people appreciate his fine bass/baritone voice in the choir and, occasionally, in reading from the scriptures during Sunday services.

A Book Review

On our Commentary page Roy Halstead has uploaded a short book review. The book's title, The First Christmas, by Marcus Borg and John Crossan tells it all. Borg and Crossan take us through the Christmas story as told in the gospels of Matthew and Luke shedding light on the historical and religious background those first century authors brought to their telling of the story of Jesus.

Those of you familiar with Borg's and Crossan's writing will find the usual surprises and the refreshing ideas they bring to their biblical commentary.

Welcome To Westminster!

Haitian Relief

On Sunday, November 14 AJ and Jana Venter, members of Westminster Church made an after-church presentation of their relief work in Haiti through their organization, The International Foundation For the Physically Disabled.

The IFPD provides prostheses, orthotics and other durable medical devices for various individuals of limited financial means. The basic philosophy behind the organisation's goals is this: WE HAVE SO MUCH TO GIVE.

Currently the IFPD is a USA registered charity, but it is operated from Winnipeg, Manitoba and in the process of registering as a Canadian non-profit.

Their current project is in conjuction with International Hope, another Winnipeg based organisation with strong ties to Westminster United Church. They are working to ship a 40 ft container with medical supplies to war-torn Uganda. The IFPD has identified two clinics (one in Kampala en one in Lira) to receive the items. Funds needed: $13,500. Donations towards this product can be made out to International Hope and will be eligible for a Canadian tax receipt.

In Memoriam

Dean Shebeski
Dr Leonard Shebeski passed away August 10th, 2010 at the age of 96. Dr. Shebeski and his wife, the late Laura Shebeski, attended Westminster Church for nearly 30 years, starting in 1960.

Dr. Shebeski was a leading figure in the field of Agriculture not only in Manitoba where he was Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, but also Canada wide and internationally. He taught initially at the University of Saskatchewan, and then became professor and Department head of the Department of Plant Science at U of M. He became Dean of the faculty in 1965 and remained there until his retirement in 1979.

He earned national and international acclaim for spearheading the development of the new cereal crop with wheat and rye parentage that he called triticale. Triticale is still produced for its high protein content and is used by plant breeders to produce desirable traits in other cereals. He was also a key player in the development of Canada's first utility wheat variety, Glenlea.

His professional activities in Canada included positions with the National Research Council, Science Council of Canada, Agricultural Institute of Canada and the Canadian Agricultural Research Council. He was also associated with Canadian International Development projects in Thailand, Kenya and Zambia. In 1977, he became an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In 1945, Len married Laura Stewart. They had four daughters: Janice (Harper), Kathryn (Hatcher), Peggy (King) and Elaine, deceased.

Threats To Burn The Koran

STATEMENT TO THE CONGREGATION ON THREATS TO BURN THE KORAN

Given by Rev. Robert Campbell at Westminster Church, Sunday, September 12, 2010

I have been asked by the Outreach Committee of our church to speak today to the threat that was being made this week by a Florida pastor and his congregation to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As people of the Word, of course we mourn and condemn any desecration of sacred texts.

After reflecting upon this matter, I offer these further thoughts:

The threat to burn sacred texts is a provocation. Acting upon the threat would be an even greater one. It seems that we are living in an era in which our public life is filled with provocations. Who is culpable on this occasion? I point the finger first at the media who cannot seem to pass up on any provocation. They have taken something that might have gone largely unnoticed and blown it up into a major problem that has set the world’s teeth on edge. Now, I suppose that we cannot do anything to stop a small band of extremists from performing a nasty act, making a video of it, and putting it up on You Tube. But what is it that compels the media to make themselves complicit in such activities and to give them more attention than they warrant? I think that there is some soul-searching needed here. The media need to learn that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from restraint.

Also culpable are the authors of the provocation themselves, Pastor Jones and his congregation. The burning of books is an assault on the mind and on the spirit, an act of violence. How could any Christian, steeped in the ways of Jesus, contemplate doing such a thing? When our fellow Christians behave in such a manner, we must be quick to take issue with them, lest the Christian faith be scandalized and the reputation of the church be sullied. Book burning is an activity for Nazis, not Christians, and we must be bold to say so.

As of today, it appears that this church in Gainsville, Florida will not be following through on its threat to burn the Koran. But, if it should change its mind and do so at a later date, or if others claiming the name of Christ should do such a thing, a message will be placed on our church sign condemning the act so that the people of our neighbourhood, Muslims especially, will know that the folk of Westminster Church operate from a different set of values and view those who would desecrate any sacred text as having betrayed the faith.

Welcome Geza, Our New Assistant Minister Geza Szemok

The Szemok Family
(Left to right Dora, Ben, Alice, Geza and Daniel)

Geza ( pronounced “Gai-sah” ) joins our ministry leadership today for a one year term.

His personal “support team” includes his wife Alice, his daughter Dora (just graduated from Grade 12), and his sons Daniel(a 1st year U student) and Ben (heading for grade 6). Geza’s theology training was at Karoli Gaspar Reformed University, Faculty of Theology, Hungary where he earned a Master of Theology degree. He was ordained 17 years ago. Further courses taken in Canada have been directed toward his personal interests in counseling and communicating faith. His previous work in Winnipeg was at the Hungarian Church (Beverley and Ellis) and in rural Manitoba.

Alice, too, is a minister (she and Geza first met during their training in Hungary!) She is presently working part-time at the Hungarian Church and at the Oak Table Community Ministry (serving street people in the Osborne Village area) which is located at Augustine United.

What do they do for fun? Bicycling, swimming , exercising and skyping with family and friend in Hungary. And Geza is very computer literate (a GOOD thing!)

Welcome to Geza and his family.

Out Of Africa: Six Weeks In Matangwe

Fall 2009, Leslie Roberts, RN, spent six weeks as a volunteer with Caring Partners Global in Kenya. This charitable organization was founded fifteen years ago by Steven & Sylvia Scott, two Kenyans now living in Kitchener, Ontario, to help the people of Matangwe, a small village with a large HIV population.

From its initial objectives, the organization has developed several sustainable projects that have made a big difference in the villagers’ lives and health. Matangwe now has its own dispensary and clinic, a tractor and water tank for hauling water, and a chicken coop project.

Currently, Caring Partners Global is applying to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for funds to build a community centre for adult education projects. They plan to teach skills such as metal-working, water-harvesting, and agricultural techniques and practices to improve and diversify the crops. Leslie’s mission in Matangwe was to perform the needs assessment that CIDA requires.

Leslie Roberts is a member of Westminster United Church, now resident in Ontario.

She will give an illustrated talk about life in Matangwe, Kenya on Tuesday April 13, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster United Church. Tickets $10.00, including light refreshments.

The Goal is 350

Saturday, Oct.24: Winnipeg’s edition of a Canada-Wide/International rally to lower the carbon content of our world’s air was held at the Legislative Bldg. with a later walk to the Forks. The issue - the number of carbon particles in the air of the planet should be no higher than 350 ppm to sustain a stable environment, proper ice caps on our two poles etc.. The World’s air is presently holding 387 ppms. Hence the global warming taking place.

On December 7/09 a meeting of reps from over 130 counties will meet in Copanhagen to discuss environmental issues. These rallys were intended to send a message to the World’s governments - We must lower that carbon content to protect our environment.
