Welcome to worship at Westminster Church. If you are worshipping with us for the first time, we hope you will sign the guest book in the lobby and stop by the “Welcome Table”. Please help yourself to any of the materials and information provided. You may also wish to fill in a “Welcome to Westminster” card to be found in the pews and place it on the offering plate or give it to an usher. As we are able to be of help, we look forward to doing so.
This week in the Winnipeg Presbytery prayer cycle, please remember the people and work of the Faculty of Theology, University of Winnipeg.

LIFE AT WESTMINSTER
A “Westminster Church Picture Book” is being created containing pictures and bios of our congregation. Rev. Geza will be taking the pictures and he would like to get started at today’s BBQ. If you are available for a photo, he would love to accommodate you. Let’s keep Geza busy!
Plan your giving. In upcoming Sundays, you will have an opportunity to share your blessings and offer support to folk in our city living with limited resources. Next Sunday, bins will be in the Narthex to receive items needed by the West Broadway Community Ministry. A list of the ministry’s current needs is printed below. The Communion Offering to be received on October 2 will be dedicated to Agape Table, the soup kitchen which operates out of All Saints’ Church. Next Sunday, we’ll hear a Minute for Mission telling us more about Agape Table’s work. On October 9 and 16, the bins will again be out, this time to receive our traditional Thanksgiving offering of non-perishable foodstuffs for Winnipeg Harvest.
West Broadway needs: food, deodorant - men's and women's, Shavers - men's and women's, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, combs and hairbrushes, socks and underwear, feminine hygiene products, towels and blankets, diapers - sizes 3 and up, coffee, tea, sugar, whitener and sweetener.
A message from Westminster Church Property Committee:
We need your help! As many of you may already know, Westminster Church applied for a variance from the City of Winnipeg this past summer in order to install an electronic sign at the corner of Westminster and Maryland. This sign would be changed via the office computer, instead of manually by caretaking staff, making is safer and more efficient. It would also make it possible for the sign to be changed multiple times a day to accommodate our many events and activities here at Westminster. Unfortunately, the original application was rejected and as a result we are asking for your help. We have been given an appeal date of September 29. If you are able to attend in person at 10:30 am to show your support, please contact Larry Elder @ 783-9616 or email @bbrocket@shaw.ca for details. Let’s show them our strength in numbers!
Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the fall edition of These Days, which are on the Welcome and Narthex tables.

Lecture series "Job: A Message for Children of Dust" at Church of The Way

Dr. August Konkel, President of Providence University College and Seminary, has agreed to teach a series of scholarly lectures on the Book of Job at Church of the Way. We are planning them for the Fall semester at 7 PM on six alternate Sunday nights, as follows:
September 18th "The Lord Gives, The Lord takes Away" (Prologue)
October 2nd "You Reap what you Sow" (Dialogue Round One)
October 16th "My Redeemer Lives" (Dialogue Round Two)
October 30th "A Covenant with God" (Monologue of Job)
November 13th "God Speaks in One Way and Two" (Response of Elihu)
November 27th "Can you Thunder like the Voice of God?" (Challenge of God)
As a professor at Providence Seminary, Dr. Konkel has taught many full and condensed courses on Job, and his commentary has been published in "Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon" (Cornerstone Biblical Commentary). For background you may wish to read one or more of the following sources:
Stephen Mitchell, The Book of Job (Harper Perennial, 1992)
S. Foster Damon, Blake's Job: William Blakes Illustrations of the Book of Job (E. P. Dutton & Co. Inc., 1969)
Norman Whybray, Job: Readings (Sheffield Academic, 1998)
The suggested registration fee will be $50 per student, or an amount that keenly interested participants are able to afford. Please invite friends outside our church who enjoy an in-depth study of scripture. Please indicate your interest to Antoinette van Kuik (avk@mts.net) or Lis Vensel (tvensel@shaw.ca).
Covenanting Services: Winnipeg Presbytery will be conducting a covenanting service at John Black Memorial Church for its new minister, Rev. Dawn Ballantine-Dickson, on Sunday, September 25 at 2:30 p.m. and a covenanting service at St. Andrew’s River Heights Church for its new minister, Rev. Lesley Fox, on Sunday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Horn of Africa Appeal: Members of the United Church have been generous in responding to the appeal for funds to support those afflicted by the extreme drought in the Horn of Africa. To date, approximately $715,000 has been received by our national office.
Celebrate the Providence University College and Seminary’s
Harvest Festival Homecoming Banquet,

We are asking for donations of turkeys (only 10 required), desserts (pumpkin pies appreciated) and items for our silent auction. If you would be willing to help with this worthwhile event, please contact Patrick Woodbeck at the Rainbow Ministry, email rainbow@wpgpres.ca or phone at 478-1060.

Greeters: As you came into the church this morning Ron Clement and Ted Barnett greeted you.
Irene Hallett is in Grace Hospital. Please remember her in your prayers.
This week in the Winnipeg Presbytery prayer cycle, please remember the people and work of the United Church in Meadowood.
TODAY
Thank you very much to Ernest Janzen for preaching the Word this morning. The choir‟s anthem, “Eatnemen Vuelie”, contains a familiar hymn in an unfamiliar arrangement. It features an old vocal tradition among the Sámi people of Scandinavia and Russia called the “Yoik.” Typical of this tradition is the use of short melodic phrases that repeat endlessly with small variations. The Yoik often describes a specific person, emotion, or other element of nature and does so with very little use of words.
Youth Confirmation Class - Backstage in the Concert Hall at 10.45 am.
Following worship, we will hold our Annual Congregational Meeting in the Lecture Hall.
THIS WEEK AT WESTMINSTER
A CHORAL CONCERT! You‟ll want to be in a pew this Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 pm, when Westminster Church will host a touring choir, the University of South Dakota Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. David Holdhusen. The music of their concert explores the theme, “A Slave‟s Journey.” It will be an emotional voyage from Africa to America; from freedom to enslavement and oppression and, through long years of endurance and struggle, towards freedom again. The story will be told in a variety of musical styles, from classical to contemporary, to folk, to African-American spiritual. For those interested, copies of the repertoire being sung have been placed on the tables in the narthex and hallway.
The Chamber Singers recently recorded a CD, “Nature’s Witness”, portions of which were played over the public address system before this morning‟s service. The CD will be available for sale on Tuesday night.
Proceeds! We will take up an offering at the concert. Our portion of the proceeds will be placed in a fund to finances senior and junior choral scholarships with which we encourage promising high school and university singers to have an experience in our choir.

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
PROPOSED REVISIONS TO THE TERMS OF REFERENCE OF THE GENERAL BOARD
The General Board is bringing to the Annual Meeting recommendations that the Westminster United Church Terms of Reference be amended to reduce the number of representatives to the Board from each standing committee from two to one, which will be either the committee chair or designate, and that the terms of vice-chair and past-chair be reduced to one year. Copies of the detailed changes in the language of the Terms of Reference needed to effect these proposals have been placed on the Welcome and Hallway Tables.
WOW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS
Following the three-session consultation with the congregation in the autumn, the WOW (Walk on Water) Committee brought a final report with recommendations to the Board at its January meeting. The Board is bringing these recommendations to the Annual Meeting for the congregation‟s consideration. The recommendations fall under the five following headings:

Stewardship 2011
Total pledges for 2011 amounted to $255,264 from 175 members and adherents. In addition, we expect to receive approximately $30,000 from individuals who do not pledge.
In 2010 we suffered a loss of over $17,000 which had been pledged in previous years but was no longer available due to death or other reasons. If that amount had been available and maintained, we would have shown a total contribution of over $272,000.
As our membership decreases and member and adherents fail to meet their pledged amounts, your committee does an excellent effort to keep the flow of funds reasonably high enough o offset increased operating costs.
I would like to thank this committee of Marilyn, Sigrid, Peter Marsden, Bb and Don for their dedication in making these results possible.
J.W. Moore
Chair of Stewardship
Report on M&S. The final totals for 2010 have been tabulated and donations to the United Church’s Mission and Service Fund totalled $29,760,784. This amount exceeded 2009 contributions by $836,616. Westminster Church gave $34,003 to M&S in 2010. In addition emergency donations received by the national church for relief following the Haiti earthquake and Pakistan floods totaled almost $4 million. The national church is grateful for the support of congregations and members from across the country and encourages us to help achieve the goal of $30,200,000 for 2011.
Nafro Dance Productions, an upstairs tenant in Augustine United Church, is donating a fundraising performance in the sanctuary, Sat. March 12 at 8 p.m. MUSIC FOR THE SOUL has been produced by Artistic Director Casimiro Nhussi and will include dancing, drumming, a saxophonist and other musicians for an inspiring evening including a dessert reception and silent auction during the intermission. Proceeds will help fund new roofing for the sanctuary. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. We are inviting people through the Pulford St. door by 7:30 for a tour of the building. Please use the north door for the 8 pm concert.

Betty Buggey passed away December 11. A memorial service is being planned for Monday, January 10 at 2:00 p.m. Let’s keep her friends and family in our prayers.

TODAY
Our Blue Christmas Service, will be held TODAY at 4 pm in the Chapel. This is a service of quiet reflection and consolation for those who have recently experienced loss, most particularly the loss of a loved one, and who are finding the Christmas season difficult to face. We hope that it will be of help to those who are feeling down or dealing with grief while the world seems to be going its merry way. We hope that it will help those who are troubled or sorrowing to prepare to participate in the traditional services and Christmas activities with a greater sense of ease and belonging.

YOUTH
Jana Venter, our youth leader, is in South Africa for a few weeks. Rev. Geza Szemok is spending time with the Youth Class in her absence. Stay in touch with Jana by visiting the Youth blog, Mustard Seed, on our website.
New members or visitors are always welcome in the Youth Class (Ages 12 and up). We ask that a parent accompany their youth on their first Sunday in class.
LIFE AT WESTMINSTER
It’s not too early to begin thinking about the 2011 Children’s Shop Christmas Sale. When you’ve finished wrapping your Christmas gifts, if you find that you have an excess of wrapping paper and don’t want to store it; or, if, in your Boxing Week Shopping you run across an incredible bargain on Christmas wrap and would like to buy some for the sale, we would gladly receive it at the office and store it for next December.
Thanks Westminster! Once again, the congregation has shown great support for the choir, and for the church. 82 tickets were sold for the Manitoba Moose game on December 28th! See you at the game!
Unit #13 is pleased to announce that the Soup Project raised $845.00 for Westminster Church. A sincere thank you to all who participated in making this such a success.
The Mitten Tree is blooming in the narthex. During Advent, the Outreach Committee invites you to bring scarves, toques, and mittens to decorate the tree. These will be distributed to Mulvey School, West Broadway Community Ministry, and Westminster Children’s Centre (Day Care). Let’s warm heads, hands and hearts this Christmas season. Thank you for your continued support.
Tax receiptable donations for 2010 must be received by the Church by Sunday, January 2, 2011.

Westminster Church is pleased to announce that Jana Venter will be our new Youth Leader starting in Sept.! She brings enthusiasm and a variety of experiences to the position. This is what she says about herself ...
Jana was born and raised in South Africa and immigrated to Canada
in her mid-twenties via 2 years in London, England. Along the way
various jobs and life experiences turned her into the person she is
today. These include teaching in South Africa, working at Harrods
in London, working at the Globe Theatre in Regina, becoming a
mother, living in California for 2 years, running a non-profit
aimed at assisting people with disabilities, and going to
post-earthquake Haiti in June 2010.
"I think being an immigrant to Canada qualifies me for working with our young adults in a unique sense: I kind of experienced adolescence twice! Or at least some of the feelings involved: wanting to belong and trying to find myself in a strange, new environment. And trying to do this as a Christian in a secular world can be very challenging. I want the youth group at our church to be a safe place for young people to ask questions, and a open space for discussions ranging from the latest book craze to friends to what colour crayon you'd like to be when you grow up - and why!"
In her free time, she loves reading, dancing with her two young girls, and sewing. And she does not like cooking.

MINUTES FOR MISSION
Preserving a Culture in Stories
Scott Douglas was a United Church overseas personnel in Fiji, thanks to the Mission and Service Fund. He worked with the United Church partner Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA), for community empowerment. Part of their work is to educate villagers about Fiji’s history. Master Sikeli was a nearly blind, retired school headmaster who held all the area’s history in his head. He knew about Fijian leaders, colonial powers, the first inhabitants, the coups, and the way indigenous peoples’ fears were exploited to allow the continuation of oppression.
Scott pointed out to ECREA staff that Sikeli wouldn’t be around forever and that someone ought to record his knowledge. Scott got the job! He worked with Master Sikeli and a cameraman, videotaping Fiji’s history from a Fijian perspective, in the Fijian language. Some material was challenging, even controversial, but it was told with Sikeli’s trademark gentleness and patience. With the support of the Mission and Service Fund, they created an invaluable resource for communities in Fiji.
The last image in the documentary is a candid of Sikeli, magnifying glass in hand, poring over an historical article. He looks up and laughs when he realizes the camera is on him. He died two weeks later. Scott says, “In some ways, the United Church sent me to Fiji to capture that image.” Your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund support important cultural and community work in Fiji and in many places around the world. Please give generously.
We are a united church! This week, remember the important
educational work we support together in local congregations,
in theological institutions, and with partners around the world.

The Church Board held a special
meeting last Tuesday evening to receive a report from the Search
Committee. At the committee's recommendation, the Board passed a
motion requesting Winnipeg Presbytery to appoint the Rev.
Geza Szemok to our vacant ministerial position. It is
hoped that Presbytery Executive will make this appointment at its
monthly meeting on Tuesday and that Rev. Szemok will be able to
begin his work with us at the beginning of July. Rev. Szemok is
currently the minister of Warren-Meadowlea Pastoral Charge and
prior to that was minister of Hungarian United Church. We will
introduce him to you more fully once his appointment is
approved.
Many thanks are due to the members of the Search Committee for their efforts. Ernest Janzen and Wayne Ryzniczuk were the congregation's representatives and Rev. Janet Walker from Churchill Park United Church was the presbytery representative. Read More...

The BLUE Amen - For the last few weeks, our Amen has changed its colour! Blue is the colour of Advent, a time of anticipation and hopefulness as we get closer to Christmas. The organ is not broken, and yes, it is supposed to make you a bit uneasy. Try to remain hopeful as we sing the Blue Amen for the last time this year - it changes again next week to the big and bright Festal Amen.

Today’s Communion
Offering will be dedicated to LITE (Local Investment
towards Employment) and the Christmas Cheer Board. LITE supports
many community development projects in the inner city, building
stronger and more self-reliant neighbourhoods. The Christmas Cheer
Board distributes hampers to the needy, helping to make Christmas a
happier time for many Winnipeg families. Communion offering
envelopes will be available on the hallway and welcome
tables.
Poinsettias accompanied by cards made by our Sunday School will be delivered to our shut-in members today. If you can help with a delivery or two, please drop into the library after the service next Sunday. There are 30 plants to deliver!
White Gift Sunday, Dec. 13, provides the opportunity to donate presents for Christmas hampers. In the past, we have received new toys, games or books for kids, or non-perishable foodstuffs. If you are bringing a gift, please leave it unwrapped, to make it easier for the Cheer Board to place it in the right hamper.
The Mitten Tree is blooming in the narthex. During Advent, Outreach invites you to bring scarves, toques, and mittens to decorate the tree. These will be distributed to Mulvey School, West Broadway Community Ministry, and Westminster Children’s Centre (Day Care). Let’s warm heads, hands, and hearts. Thank you for your continued support.

"Nathan's Voices United
Playlist"
Next week, October 18, be ready to come to church early (10:15am) for a hymn sing! I have chosen what I think are the best examples of United Church of Canada hymns in our hymnbook, come and "sing" if you agree.
You were asking:
The “Green Amen” comes from the set “Amens for all Seasons”. Each Amen is representative of a specific church season, Green being the colour of “ordinary time” or Sundays outside of Advent, and Lent. The accompaniment changes “colours” with the seasons, while the melody remains the same. Throughout the church year we will hear shades of Blue, Violet, Rose, and Gold. This melody was composed for congregational singing, so please join in with the choir and sing. AMEN!

Stewardship Committee Report
The 2009 Stewardship Campaign has been completed and resulted in total pledges of $291, 861 compared to $302, 913 last year. This decrease can be attributed to a lesser number of pledges due to various circumstances. We do not feel that the current economic downturn will adversely affect future contributions but we are concerned about the members that fall short on their pledges. This past year we experienced a short fall of $14,733.92. We encourage any in this category to endeavour to bring their pledges up to date. Thank you to all who have helped us these past years. We look forward to your support in the year ahead.

In light of the recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Palestine, our Moderator, David Giuliano offered the following comment. “The teachings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are rooted in love, peace, and justice. I invite all religious leaders to join hearts to witness to those roots through prayer and action for peace. As faith leaders, let us demonstrate that religion is a force for life, not death, in the world.”
Our February Communion Offering will be given to United For Peace. This is our opportunity to support peace initiatives with partner organizations as they work toward a just peace with dignity for all God’s people. If you have boxed envelopes you will find Communion envelopes inside. If not, they are available on the Welcome and Narthex tables.

world’s peoples are suffering through almost 40 armed conflicts in

there are over 600 million small arms in circulation around the

Campaign of the United Church of Canada, was approved at the 39th

and the need to work toward just peace in Canada and others parts
of the world.
In light of the recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Palestine, our Moderator, David Guialiano offered the following comment. “The teachings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are rooted in love, peace, and justice. I invite all religious leaders to join hearts to witness to those roots through prayer and action for peace.
