Welcome! Thou worthy crown,

The BLUE Amen - For the last few weeks, our Amen has changed its colour! Blue is the colour of Advent, a time of anticipation and hopefulness as we get closer to Christmas. The organ is not broken, and yes, it is supposed to make you a bit uneasy. Try to remain hopeful as we sing the Blue Amen for the last time this year - it changes again next week to the big and bright Festal Amen.

Today’s Communion Offering will be dedicated to LITE (Local Investment towards Employment) and the Christmas Cheer Board. LITE supports many community development projects in the inner city, building stronger and more self-reliant neighbourhoods. The Christmas Cheer Board distributes hampers to the needy, helping to make Christmas a happier time for many Winnipeg families. Communion offering envelopes will be available on the hallway and welcome tables.

Poinsettias accompanied by cards made by our Sunday School will be delivered to our shut-in members today. If you can help with a delivery or two, please drop into the library after the service next Sunday. There are 30 plants to deliver!

White Gift Sunday, Dec. 13, provides the opportunity to donate presents for Christmas hampers. In the past, we have received new toys, games or books for kids, or non-perishable foodstuffs. If you are bringing a gift, please leave it unwrapped, to make it easier for the Cheer Board to place it in the right hamper.

The Mitten Tree is blooming in the narthex. During Advent, Outreach invites you to bring scarves, toques, and mittens to decorate the tree. These will be distributed to Mulvey School, West Broadway Community Ministry, and Westminster Children’s Centre (Day Care). Let’s warm heads, hands, and hearts. Thank you for your continued support.

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING

Led by Katherine Abra, Margaret Hodson, and Janice Anderson

THE GIFTS OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS — WEST

As the candle travels to the wreath the congregation will sing Hymn 19:

Kindle a flame to lighten the dark and take all fear away.

At the invitation of the leader all will join to pray:

Creator God, as we prepare for your way in our world,
give us the courage to look within ourselves
to see what needs to be changed.
Help us to turn from all that separates us from you and from each other;
and to turn toward you, walking in the light of your love. Amen.

The liturgy will conclude with the singing of Hymn 28, vs. 3:

Herald! Sound the note of pardon! Those repenting are forgiven;
God receives these wayward children, and to all new life is given.
Sound the trumpet! Tell the message! Christ the Saving One has come!

At the conclusion of the hymn, the members of the Sunday School will go to their classes.

The Goal is 350

Saturday, Oct.24: Winnipeg’s edition of a Canada-Wide/International rally to lower the carbon content of our world’s air was held at the Legislative Bldg. with a later walk to the Forks. The issue - the number of carbon particles in the air of the planet should be no higher than 350 ppm to sustain a stable environment, proper ice caps on our two poles etc.. The World’s air is presently holding 387 ppms. Hence the global warming taking place.

On December 7/09 a meeting of reps from over 130 counties will meet in Copanhagen to discuss environmental issues. These rallys were intended to send a message to the World’s governments - We must lower that carbon content to protect our environment. The Winnipeg Rally was organized by Climate Change Connection (Climate Change Connection.org) professors of the University of Winnipeg, Kairos and several other local groups concerned with our environment. "Nathan's Voices United Playlist"
Next week, October 18, be ready to come to church early (10:15am) for a hymn sing! I have chosen what I think are the best examples of United Church of Canada hymns in our hymnbook, come and "sing" if you agree.

You were asking:
The “Green Amen” comes from the set “Amens for all Seasons”. Each Amen is representative of a specific church season, Green being the colour of “ordinary time” or Sundays outside of Advent, and Lent. The accompaniment changes “colours” with the seasons, while the melody remains the same. Throughout the church year we will hear shades of Blue, Violet, Rose, and Gold. This melody was composed for congregational singing, so please join in with the choir and sing. AMEN!

You blessed souls at rest, that see your Saviour’s face,

All nations of the earth, extol the world’s great King:

And all my days,
let no distress nor fears suppress his joyful praise.

Request for food assistance to urban ministries: Summer tends to be a low time for stocks of emergency food at the ministries, and there has been a sharp increase in August in the numbers relying on emergency food assistance at St. Matthew's-Maryland Community Ministry. PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God,
whose mercy and loving kindness do not fail;
we confess to you with our whole heart
our neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments,
our failures in the care of your creation,
our wrong doing, speaking, and thinking,
the harm we have done to others,
and the good we have left undone.

O God, forgive your people who have sinned against you.
In your great compassion,
cleanse us from our sin,
Create in us a clean heart,
and renew a right spirit within us;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN 164 “The Day of Resurrection”

PRAYER OF APPROACH

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God and Father of the living Christ,
we have seen your purpose for us
in the one who lived with vibrant faith,
and who died with steadfast resolve.
We who seek to follow your Christ
know only too well our weaknesses and failings.
Our living is often without such faith.
Our resolve in the face of trials often deserts us.
Our doubts and fears rob our lives of confidence,
so that death is with us, even in life.
Come to us in the power of your love.
Snap the chains of death again, as at the first Easter.
Shatter the power of sin and evil,
the death within us that cripples our living.
Set us free to know your gift of life,
free to live joyfully as your people,
free to live out your praise in lives of courage and hope;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Stewardship Committee Report

The 2009 Stewardship Campaign has been completed and resulted in total pledges of $291, 861 compared to $302, 913 last year. This decrease can be attributed to a lesser number of pledges due to various circumstances. We do not feel that the current economic downturn will adversely affect future contributions but we are concerned about the members that fall short on their pledges. This past year we experienced a short fall of $14,733.92. We encourage any in this category to endeavour to bring their pledges up to date. Thank you to all who have helped us these past years. We look forward to your support in the year ahead.

Communion
The Sacrament of Communion will be celebrated next Sunday, Feb. 1st. The elements will be received at stations.

Peace Dove
Are you aware that currently the world’s peoples are suffering through almost 40 armed conflicts in 27 countries, child soldiers are involved in at least 17 of these conflicts, annual military spending is over $1.1 trillion, and there are over 600 million small arms in circulation around the world—one for every 10 people on the planet? The United for Peace Campaign of the United Church of Canada, was approved at the 39th General Council 2006 out of grave concern for the situation in Israel and Palestine. The scope of the campaign has been broadened by the Executive of the General Council to also address conflict and the need to work toward just peace in Canada January 25, 2009 and others parts of the world.

In light of the recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Palestine, our Moderator, David Giuliano offered the following comment. “The teachings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are rooted in love, peace, and justice. I invite all religious leaders to join hearts to witness to those roots through prayer and action for peace. As faith leaders, let us demonstrate that religion is a force for life, not death, in the world.”

Our February Communion Offering will be given to United For Peace. This is our opportunity to support peace initiatives with partner organizations as they work toward a just peace with dignity for all God’s people. If you have boxed envelopes you will find Communion envelopes inside. If not, they are available on the Welcome and Narthex tables.
