...This week in the Winnipeg Presbytery prayer cycle, please remember the people and work of Korean United Church.

...There will be a congregational meeting following worship on Sunday, January 8 to receive and act upon the report of the Joint Needs Assessment Committee which was reviewed and approved with some minor amendments by the Church Board at its December meeting. A motion will be put forward to ask Winnipeg Presbytery to declare a vacancy for a “diaconally-oriented” full-time second ministry position. If this motion is approved by the congregation and presbytery, a Joint Search Committee will then be put in place to seek a minister to fill the position. Copies of the JNAC report which includes profiles of the church, its ministerial needs and the job-description for this position are available from the Church Office or from Carol Latter, Chair of the Needs Assessment Committee.

The United Church Manual stipulates that only members of the congregation may vote at a meeting dealing with pastoral relationships. However, adherents and supporters of Westminster Church are also encouraged to attend and to present their views during discussion time.

...Szemok will also be preparing a Conversation Time with the children for January 1.

...The last date for 2011 receiptable donations to the church will be Sunday, January 1, 2012.

...This is a service of quiet reflection and consolation for those who have recently experienced loss, most particularly the loss of a loved one, and who are finding the Christmas season difficult to face. We hope that it will be of help to those who are feeling down or dealing with grief while the world seems to be going its merry way. We hope that it will help those who are troubled or sorrowing to prepare to participate in the traditional services and Christmas activities with a greater sense of ease and belonging.

...This year the Outreach Committee is looking for your help to fill a Christmas hamper for a family that we have adopted. The opportunity to help this family of four children, ages 14 (boy), 9, 7 and 2 years (girls), and a single Mom, was given to us through the Salvation Army Weetamah.

...We welcomed over 100 children and their adults to the Church last Saturday, giving the kids a chance to choose gifts for family and friends, and the adults a few moments of peace in the generous refreshments room, planned and looked after by Boyd Rausch and the Outreach folks. ... In the weeks and months before the sale, Marilyn Thiessen and Dan Beauvais were enthusiastic and tireless about taking in donations and lugging them downstairs to the Bat Cave, and then Dan cheerfully helped haul it all back up again.

The event was organized by Westminster's energetic Outreach Committee: Boyd Rausch, Ron Miller, Wayne Ryzniczuk, Sherrie Steiner, Annette Kletke and Suzie Conrad. As there was no kitchen stove for the organizers to work with, they enlisted many volunteers from the congregation to help with the cooking and baking. The dinner was delicious. At least 23 pies were baked (Kim Nelson donated 8) and 6 turkeys were roasted in private homes. The dinner was followed by a talent auction which included resume writing, dinner offers, desserts, baking, afternoon tea, special anthem, special sermon, income tax filing etc. Doug Abra as auctioneer.

The dinner realized a profit of $1985.90. The Talent Auction raised $2780. Sadly, many families dread Christmas because of the economic strain it brings. When mums and dads can’t encourage children to be part of the generosity of the season, it adds to the heartbreak for families with little Christmas cash.

Westminster provides an opportunity for children to shop and wrap gifts for everyone on their lists without spending more than a few dollars. Meanwhile, their adults can relax in the Library with a cup of tea or coffee and a dessert, and enjoy the serenity of our lovely church.

And this all happens because of you!

You make it happen by donating items such as costume jewelry, toiletries, knitting, stationery, household items, cups and saucers, mugs, stuffed toys, books, perfume, games, puzzles, ties - anything you think a child might like to give to family members or friends. We also need wrapping paper, ribbon, tags, and bags.

Please be sure that your items are in new condition. Please drop off your donations at the Church office soon, and watch for opportunities to volunteer at the sale.

Westminster General Board Chair, Doug Abra, added to the celebration mentioning that we can look forward to a major revision to the organ during the summer of 2012. Casavant Brothers, the original builders of Westminster's pipe organ, will be responsible for the renovations.

Later in the day at the opening concert of the organ series, Thomas Trotter, organist at The Town Hall in Birmingham, England, paid tribute to Don in remarks to the audience and dedicated his encore to Don. The audience gave Don another round of applause for his work at Westminster.

...Toronto: The United Church of Canada congratulated the federal government today for its commitment to provide an additional $50 million in financial support to humanitarian organizations delivering assistance to people in East Africa who are suffering as a result of the worst drought in 60 years.

...In addition The United Church of Canada congratulated the federal government on its commitment to match the charitable donations of Canadians who take action to support charities of their choice.

“These matching funds will encourage Canadians from all walks of life to provide direct support to organizations that are working in East Africa right now,” says David Armour, The United Church of Canada’s Director of Philanthropy.

The United Church of Canada is providing humanitarian relief in the region through its partners, including ACT Alliance, the National Council of Churches in Kenya, and the Organization of African Instituted Churches. Earlier this week the United Church announced it was launching an Emergency Appeal for the Horn of Africa to respond to this humanitarian crisis. Today’s announcement means that funds raised through this appeal between July 6, 2011 and September 16, 2011, will be matched by the federal government.

Members of the United Church and the general public are encouraged to contribute to the work of ACT and the United Church’s partners on the ground in East Africa by making a donation today.

...Congratulations to Chantel Lamboo & Trevor Gerrits, Tanya Zacharias & Stefan Hirsch and Elizabeth Kluzinksi & Justin Dunn who were married at Westminster Church yesterday; and also to Murray Birt and Sally Latham who were married in a civil ceremony in Britain and held their religious service here yesterday.

...Within the last year, gifts of $250 were made to a family from the West End and a family from the North End, both with a large number of children, who lost their possessions when fire consumed their homes.

...Toronto: The United Church of Canada announced today that it is launching an emergency appeal in response to the famine and drought crisis in East Africa. ... As an immediate response, the church has already committed $50,000 from its emergency response fund to the humanitarian relief work of its partners in the region.

Those partners, including ACT Alliance, the National Council of Churches in Kenya, and the Organization of African Instituted Churches, report that this is the worst drought to hit the region in 60 years.

One ACT news story notes that the mix of drought, skyrocketing food prices, food shortages, deaths of livestock in large numbers and conflict in Somalia has led to a massive increase in the number of new arrivals each day in Dadaab refugee camp on the Kenya–Somalia border.

...ACT‘s Lennart Hernander, in Nairobi, says people are arriving at Dadaab noticeably malnourished and that between 20 and 30 children die of malnutrition in the camp each month.

...Rikke Holm, a Horn of Africa representative of ACT Alliance member DanChurchAid, reports by text message, “The old men tell us that they collect the dead animals near the village and burn them to avoid diseases.

...In the two worst-affected countries, Kenya and Ethiopia, ACT is distributing food and supplementary feeding for children, the elderly and nursing mothers; improving existing water supplies; and trucking in water to some areas.

...For now ACT‘s priorities are to meet people‘s urgent need for food, clean water, shelter and medicine and to join forces with other aid agencies, UN bodies, and governments to reach as many as possible of the 10 million people who risk starving to death.

Westminster Weekly News

If you are worshipping with us for the first time, we hope you will sign the guest book in the lobby and stop by the “Welcome Table”. ... In this setting, there are roles for Jesus and the Narrator, and the other characters may be sung by one person (as done in the 2007 premiere) or by different people (as done today); the choir assumes the roles of the Jews and the crowd. While the vocal parts are steeped in chant, the accompaniment is constructed on a completely different principle: In many places the accompaniment spins out meditative repetitions of motifs drawn from hymns, specifically chosen for the words which go with those motifs; this gives an implied textual underlay to the music.

...Later, when Jesus asks that his disciples be released (fulfilling the prophecy, - “I did not lose a sing one of those whom you gave me‖), the violins spin out the words - and will not let us fall” (from How clear is our vocation, Lord).

...Whenever Peter is questioned about his connection to Jesus, the organ and strings spin out the words “yet he shall be forsaken” (from A Stable Lamp is Lighted); this ends in Peter’s denial every time.

...At the words, “This was to fulfil what Jesus said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die”, we hear the hymn As When the Hebrew Prophet Raised, indicating that the kind of death was crucifixion, as prophesied in the story of the brazen serpent. As Jesus explains to Pilate that his - kingdom is not of this world‖ the strings spin out the opening words of the hymn Christ is the King.

...When Pilate shows the beaten Jesus to the crowd, the violins spin out a twisted version of the “Christ is the King” motif while the viola spins out the opening notes of O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded.

...As Jesus is stripped of his garments, the strings spin out the words “beggared by a soldier’s toss‖ (from You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd).

...When the soldier pierces Jesus’ side with a spear, the strings spin out the words “Let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed” ending with “be of sin the double cure: cleanse me from its guilt and power” (from Rock of Ages). While this is going on, at the words “None of his bones shall be broken”, the first violin plays “For under their affliction's weight he keeps their bones entire” (from Through all the changing scenes of life); at the words “They will look on the one they have pierced”, the first violin plays “we, who scorned and mocked and sold thee, pierced and nailed thee to the tree… shall the true Messiah see” (from Lo!

Maundy Thursday

view PDF version (0.49 MB) [Adobe Acrobat is required]

...For about fifteen years, Henk worked in various aspects of Social Work in the Province of Manitoba, but in his late forties he felt a call to go back to ministry and he entered the United Church’s Training Program that would lead to becoming a Trained Lay Pastoral Minister in the United Church.

...The Winnipeg Music Festival concludes this week with it’s Trophy Evening on Saturday, March 19 at 7 pm and the Gala Concert on March 20 at 2 pm.

...On Tuesday, March 8 our congregation hosted the University of South Dakota Chamber Singers who gave a thrilling concert in our sanctuary, their first appearance outside of the United States. Thanks are due to all who helped make the event a success: those who organized one aspect or another of our hospitality; those who put up posters and made other promotional efforts; those who put together a wonderful supper for the choir, preparing dishes, setting up, serving, and cleaning up; those who managed the house for the concert; and those who took the students into their homes for the night and delivered them back to the church early the next morning.

...As so often happens in our sanctuary, we had the opportunity to experience the joy of music and, on this occasion, the chance to meet a group of students who were genuinely thrilled to be in Winnipeg and performing in our church.

...Those responsible for the King James Version, or Authorized Version, did such a remarkable job that one author who wrote a book about its preparation entitled it God’s Secretaries.

...On Wednesday evenings from March 16 to April 6, folk from different faith traditions will have the opportunity to come together to explore the recently written Charter for Compassion and to consider how compassion might take deeper root in our common life.

...The Charter, crafted by people all over the world and drafted by a multi-faith, multi-national council of thinkers and leaders, seeks to change the conversation so that compassion becomes a key word in public and private discourse, making it clear that any ideology that breeds hatred or contempt ~ be it religious or secular ~ has failed the test of our time.

...If you'd like to be accompanied through Lent by a United Church community that's praying together in this season, please join me and others in prayer and online conversation while using this year's Lenten devotional book, Rising with the Morning Star: http://www.wondercafe.ca/risingmorningstar. This is an opportunity to share in a living spirituality that sustains the journey of faith doing justice, focused on God's healing of soul, community and creation.

...Our two staff have been working at .5 time in 2010 and beginning on January 1, they will both work .8 time and we hope to engage them full time before the year is over.

...This belief is at the heart of the North End Stella Community Ministry and freed of the administrative load of carrying a big building we are now able to move ahead and forge partnerships that will help many organizations in the North End reduce duplication of services and draw upon our resources to deliver programming with a solid spiritual base.

...And, every day I think “problems are psychological but solutions are spiritual” or in the words of the traditional caregiver whose office is across from mine, “Why work with the head, when you can work with the heart?” It is not uncommon to meet young people who have traditional elders and Christian elders in their extended family and often they are confused believing they have to choose one over the other.

...I don’t deny that the building at the corner of Stella and Powers has a phenomenal history and if walls could talk, the last hundred years would provide for some fascinating storytelling. ... I am a firm believer in the adage of “nothing ventured, nothing gained” and the fact that the agreement we had to share our building with another organization that has not panned out means that we are venturing. ... Sinclair, which sets our work in its historical context and speaks the truth that we address “racism, poverty and residential school issues” and that this does not “pay the bills, or attract big donors.” However, the unfortunate headline sends the wrong message to our loyal supporters and to the community we work with knowing the reality is that many people just read the headlines, or let the headlines dictate the interpretation of what follows.

...It is important for you who have supported Stella over the years to know that the work is still important, that it is still happening and that your support is as important and appreciated as it ever has been. And so, we say “thank you” to once again to those who have supported our work with their time, talent and treasure over the past year.

Calum Matthews on the bagpipes

Calum, son of Nancy and Doug Matthews, was in Winnipeg for his grandfather, Sterling Lyon’s, funeral service on December 22. ROBERT CAMPBELL

Sometime soon, my family hopes to take in a showing of “The King‟s Speech,” the highly acclaimed new movie about King George VI‟s struggles with stammering and his relationship with the therapist who helped him overcome this disability, thus enabling him to speak to his subjects without embarrassment for him or for them. It was, of course, the behaviour of his feckless brother, Edward VIII, who gave up the throne to marry the American divorcee, Wallace Simpson, that thrust George into this predicament and forced him to come to terms with his impediment. That the king rose to the occasion can be measured by the way he both comforted and rallied the nation with a radio address following the outbreak of the Second World War in September, 1939. This, apparently, is the climactic moment in the movie. Later that year, in his Christmas Broadcast, King George quoted a poem that seemed capture the needs of his people as they faced the dark and uncertain years which lay ahead.

The poem still makes worthy reading at the beginning of any new year, though thankfully, for all our troubles, we live in much better times than the British people faced that Christmas. Nevertheless, the future is always an unknown, both for individuals and for society, and we do well to take its message to heart:

I said to a man who stood at the gate of the year, “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown,” And he replied, “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light And safer than the known way.”
